New Summer Work – Part 2 – Running

Posted on June 2nd, 2011 by Kamil Bialous.

Trail running shoot in Tofino, Vancouver Island, BC with photographer Kamil Bialous.

This is a continuation of my previous post on this topic where I promised to put up some new stuff I've been shooting this spring/summer.

I've been visiting one location in particular and trying to learn to see it better. I find that each place has a way that it wants to be shown: its moods, colours (or lack thereof), contrasts, and little nuances like winds and clouds. I'm not trying to get all hippy on you and spoon feed you home made granola (nothing wrong with that, I love granola) but it's taken me almost 5 trips back to start realizing that I can't force my typical way of  shooting on this environment. I can bring some style and swagger, but too much and the pictures don't look authentic.

And if I don't have authentic - what do I have? Enjoy.

A Hilarious Day of Climbing in Squamish – in Photos

Posted on August 4th, 2010 by Kamil Bialous.

Words won't do justice to how fun Squamish can be when you get a few good friends together. We've dubbed it "summer camp for adults." With a slight chance of rain looming in the forecast, the chance was played and the crag was hiked to. We left Peter's house and about an hour later we arrived at Fern Hill, a small sport climbing crag behind Valleycliffe in Squamish. A touch of rain drizzle didn't faze us, and we spent the day hanging out, shooting photos, and trying new routes.

The crag has a wide range of routes for most climbing skill levels, but tends to focus on the intermediate and higher grades.

Here are some photos from the day with commentary where appropriate. (Click to enlarge, Esc to get out).

A bit humid on the approach.Right, Guido Vettoretti?

Long walks bring out the most atrocious ideas in men. They will not be mentioned here.

Walking through the humid fern forest of... Fern Hill.

Dale Sood racking up. Style points for the button-down.

Taking it simple and easy.

Scotty Winston in his very proper belay stance. Rep-ing heavy for patagonia.

If only we knew what he was thinking. If we did, I would not be able to write it here.

Guido Vettoretti on a new route at Fern Hill called Hot Chaude / Yellow Fever. 5.12 hard.

The creator of said route (Hot Chaude / Yellow Fever 5.12 hard) Dale Sood says, "do it right ! is easy! eat yo vetables!"The dude, takin'er eas'.

Dale Sood on upper crux of Hot Chaude / Yellow Fever. Still takin'er eas'.

Guido's whipped with slack in-hand. A touch scary.

Guido Vettoretti back on it (Hot Chaude / Yellow Fever). Workin out the sequences.

Yes! Tastes so good. Guido on the upper cruxes of Hot Chaude / Yellow Fever at Fern Hill.

Thanks to some reggae music, the clouds went away, and the sun came out for the great hike back, and beers at the Shady Tree.

Thanks to the gang (left to right, hiking out): Guido Vettoretti, Dale Sood, Scotty Winston, and Jen Mansour for a good time.

Like the photos? Drop me a line: contact@kamilbialous.com - I'm always interested in hooking up with new people to photograph.

Some early season spring bouldering images for y'all before the Niagara Glen limestone gets nice and sweaty like yo' mama's back. Get at it while the friction is good. Thanks to the boys and girls for throwing down on this day. It was fun!

Can’t Wait for Winter Out East! – My Favourite Ski Photos from Last Year

So I can hardly keep still while trying to stay satiated by watching the weather reports pout in from out west. Whistler at record snowfall for November, and November not even over? Give me a break. Seriously. I'd definitely rather not be enjoying these mediocre east temperatures any longer. Give me the pow already! I've watched what feels like every single ski video available on youtube and vimeo, schemed numerous plans to ski at such and such, dusted off the skis, washed up the grimey ski gear from last year, and purchased a few new pits and ends to make this year stellar. Now gimme the snow!

While I do my snow dance for Ontario, I give you some of my favourite ski photos I shot last year. Some of these you may have seen before in one way or another; perhaps on my portfolio site which I just updated with some more, so check it out for big juicy photos displayed nice and huge - how they were meant to be shown. So enjoy the photos, and if you're out east, hope they keep you stoked until some snow arrives out here.

Cheers.
